Abdul Taib Mahmud, is Sarawak’s chief minister.Taib, who is now aged 72, drives around in a vanilla Rolls-Royce, is one of the richest and most powerful men in Malaysian politics. He also serves as Sarawak’s finance minister and planning minister. The family-owned firm, Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS), has interests in cement, construction, quarrying and road building. It has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rio Tinto, the London-listed mining group, to build a “world class” aluminium smelter that will get its electricity from a dam at Bakun. The Bakun dam, a separate project due to be completed by 2011, has already displaced an estimated 10,000 indigenous people, leading to bitter legal battles and a chorus of dismay from economists about cost overruns. These two projects that are funded by central government who don’t know of the destruction.
Two million acres have vanished every year as trees are felled, the wood sold and the land turned over to oil palms. The greatest plunderer of all came with Indonesia’s late dictator, Suharto, who doled out timber concessions to generals and cronies during his 32 years in power. Now the central government in Jakarta is winning praise for a determined crackdown that has slowed the rate of illegal logging. The vegetable oil comes from crushed palm husks. Long used for cooking, cosmetics and soap, it has now become a principal source of bio diesel fuel. There is an Oder and further pollutants from residues out side the processing plants. The rivers have been contaminated with logging. 250,000 Native Forrest people are been left hungry thus been enslaved with their only alternative has been to survive. The Forrest people go with out food for weeks and are starting to suffer from the effects of under nutrition. This pillages of modern times, is justified by a need for two hydroelectric dams to be used in smelting. When there is an over production of electricity by as much as 20%. So this need is clearly not justified. The hydroelectric plants are promoted by Chinese firms who want to implement there system of expansion which is a volatile mix. Dayaks are being forced out of their villages because engineers from Sino Hydro, a second Chinese contractor, are building yet another dam to improve the water supply to Kuching, Capital of Sarawak. One villager reports “We are 28 families, in our village since our ancestors,” said Simo Anakbekam, 48. “The government says we must leave. We want them to recognise our rights to the owner ship of our land.” The owner ship of this land has been handed down by Her Royal Majesty in 1848 to the James Brook of the White Rajahs thus establish himself as the sole ruler of freedom to the Forrest peoples 1946. Officers recorded land tenure of this region, as a way to stop head hunting wars among the Dayaks. The Rajah granted these leases to the people of Faraway Sarawak. Book club question to Abdul Taib Mahmud from London and the world, what are you doing with your program of DE forestation's? This is an Unlawful invasion along with this a misappropriation of funds and could cause you the loss of ministerial governance.
200.000 Forrest people will be enslaved as a result of this replanting of palm oil not to mention the complete extinction, of Inhabitant species. So this crime agents the environment and tourism as there is an over production of electricity by 20% or more. This is to say there are 12 new dams near Murum and 10,000 tribal people have been ordered off there land in the center of the Rain Forrest in Sarawak these dams are to be completed by 2011 and then there the contamination of both logging and crushed husks into the future. Forrest being reduced by an area the size of Switzerland each year. with no taught of Sarawak's future to tourism. In Africa with the extent of logging of natural rain Forrest being evident in both Nigeria and Brazil. Sources are from. Grate Ape Trust, Wildlife Direct, Conservation Research, US department of agriculture, and mongoboy.com. Book club reports that the hydro electric dams have been postponed. As it has been said before the planet is for everybody to cherish, it is the logging and waste full destruction that is so obscene. Eco tourism is a very valuable commodity that benefits every bodies well being. Just think! what can sand Cristal's bring only any empty cry of hopelessness. Rain Forrest's are being reduced to desert both now and into the next millennium, is anybody shocked!
